“The Independent” press stopped publishing paper newspaper from the date March 26th, terminating the 30-year history of existence of the newspaper which is the second largest in Britain. In the last publication of the printed newspaper, the Independent sent a message to the readers: “Today, the printing press stops working, the ink has dried and the paper newspaper is no longer exists. But when one chapter closes, another chapter will open, and the spirit of ‘The Independent’ will never turn off”. Earlier, the Independent on Sunday 22/3 was also out of print eventually. Decision to stop publishing The Independent is launched, the owner of the press, the original Russian billionaire, Evgeny Lebedev, last February 12th. Explaining about the decision this shocking, Mr. Lebedev said that the newspaper industry is changing, and that change “is due to readers”. The owner of the 30-year-old press insists the choice of readers for the future of modern journalism is digitized. In the past, a number of newspapers and magazines of America, as “CS Monitor”, “US News & World Report,” and most recently as “The New York Times” had to stop issuing printed version due to the amount of release decrease and redirect focus on developing electronic newspapers. “The Independent” has followed this trend, becoming the first enormous newspaper in Britain which moved completely to release the electronic press. According to data of the agency checked on the number of issued newspaper (ABC), just before the stop release, “The Independent” just released nearly 56,000/day. While in the 2010-2011 period, the number of release notifications in at more than 180,000 prints/day. At its peak, this newspaper ever released to 400.000 prints/day. Obviously, the decrease of released is the main reason the printed newspaper “The Independent” is “death”. In addition, an information that the experts are noting that mr. Lebedev decided to sell the papers, “i”, abridged content of the printed newspaper itself, for the newspaper group Johnston Press based in Scotland with a price of 24 million pounds. According to Johnston Press, the net profit of the “i” is 5.2 million pounds. Sheets “i” are retail price 40 cents on weekdays and 50 cents on Saturday, the amount released reached 275.000/day. The analysis reviews that there is no sheet “i” help, “The Independent” will meet non-less difficult in next time. Mr. Lebedev has stressed the big changes of “The Independent” unaffected the development of newspapers, insteading focus on improving the quality of content. However, in the commentary titled “Independent – the first victims of the future digitization” of “The Guardian” journalist Steven Brill for that matter content of the electronic newspaper is also a competition very harshly. “If you want to sell content online, you need things to sell. You have to invest and lose money in the short term by enhancing the quality of things you do. We can say that, yes, the New York Times are achieving these results, but they have hundreds of thousands of quality articles on the electronic version. Readers aren’t stupid. They will not buy things that they might have elsewhere. They only buy things that they can’t get for free from elsewhere”, Brill said in an interview of the institute Poynter. Revenue after the printing press was “death” of “The Independent” is still the difficult problem solving when reviewing to profit of advertising on the electronic newspaper can decrease in comparison with advertising in print before, especially when readers can read the post on the electronic application which does not take account for free.
